Why Delta House Of Assembly Endorse Ijaw/Itsekiri Peace And Unity Cup 2019 – Speaker
Asaba: The speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has endorsed the Ijaw/Itsekiri Peace and Unity Cup also known as Comrade Sheriff Mulade Peace Cup football tournament, the speaker commended Comrade Mulade for the initiative and said is a positive strategy in realizing social economic development, and also is a means for providing a contact platform for interaction between divergent ethnic groups as well as sustain youth development and integration into a new cultural consciousness for peaceful coexistence.
While appreciating the local organizing committee members for the 2019 edition that paid a courtesy call at his resident in Asaba particularly thanked Comrade Sheriff Mulade for initiating and sustaining the grassroot football competition that started since 2017.
He applauded the two ethic tribes taking part in the football tournament and charged them to continue to maintain and promote the peaceful coexistence among the various communities in the coastal region of the state.
Rt. Hon. Oborevwori added that through games and sports, the idle youth can be engaged in identifying their talents in sports and shun activities unsupportive of peaceful coexistence.
According to the speaker, “Football is unifying because it brings together diverse people through a shared love of sports.
“In addition to players needing to trust each other on the pitch, coming together to practice and play matches on a regular basis increase contact between different groups, encouraging friendship and reducing prejudice.
So I call on the teams taking part in this year’s unity and peace tournament to note that the Delta State Government will continue to support and encourage such ventures for the huge benefits it brings to our state both in human and capital development.”
In response, “The chairman of the LOC, Hon. Kenneth Nwaomucha and the initiator of the tournament, Comrade Sheriff Mulade both in their separate speeches emphasized the importance of the football tournament to the two ethnic tribes with an over all intension of discovering young football talents in the riverine communities in the state.
“The originator of the tournament, Comrade Sheriff Mulade explained that this year’s LOC for the tournament was broadened to accommodate sports personalities that are not from the two ethnic tribes taking part in the competition so as to ensure transparency, unbiased officiating and to have a level playing ground for all the communities that will participate in the tournament.
The local organizing committee chairman Kenneth Nwaomucha later presented the official jersey for the tournament to the speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.
In a related development, the Delta State House of Assembly, Chairman House Committee on Youths and Sports, Hon. Fred Martins. the Honourable member representing Warri North Constituency, Hon. Felix Anira, Honourable member representing Sapele Constituency, and the member representing Warri South West Constituency, Hon Emomotimi Guwor, who is also the Chief Host of the tournament have all endorsed the 2019 Ijaw/Itsekiri Peace and Unity Cup.
Their endorsement of the peace and unity football tournament was confirmed when the Local Organizing Committee members visited the Legislatures at their residents in Asaba to present the official Jerseys for the tournament as well as intimate the lawmakers on the committee’s readiness towards hosting a successful 2019 Sheriff Mulade Peace and Unity Cup.
Addressing the committee members, the. Legislatures charged them to bring their expertise and wealth of experiences to bear in ensuring that the objectives of the tournament is achieved.
They assured the committee of their total support and urged well meaning individuals and corporate organization in the region to partner with the Local Organizing Committee in making this edition a memorable one.
