THE DELIMA OF PDP AS A LOYAL OPPOSITION IN NIGERIA POLITICAL SYSTEM – COMR GBEJIMOR

By Comrade Gbejimor Henry

In a political and truly democratic endeavour, the foundational basis for checks and balance played by a formidable opposition leads to the horizontal separation of powers rather than a vertical formulation of pragmatic ethos of corruption.

Central to this balance in government is that of the expression of opposition on a parallel
political level because a competitive opposition is sacrosanct to the smooth running of a representative democracy and at the same time, helped in galvanizing the citizenry to partake in government’s activities and psyche of those in position of authority.

The People Democratic Party (PDP) after his unexpected defeat in 2015 at the Central, as a former ruling party in Nigeria and the largest political party in Africa has resulted to the beach as a loyal opposition party without voice to check-make the excesses of APC as ruling political party at Central in our country Nigeria.

Prior before the 2015 general elections in Nigeria, the then opposition party APC now a ruling party played a very vibrant and pragmatic opposition with all seriousness and dedication thereby check-matting every move and abysmal performance of PDP government and management of our national resources at all levels of governance thereby bringing Nigerians into the spot light of the failures of the then government.

“The need to strike a delicate balance between majority power and minority rights is the catalyst to the noble roles any political party in opposition in a democracy settings is expected to engage in.

Elections in Nigeria today are no more than reassurance rituals which takes place intermittently with uninterrupted exercise of
influence by the elites and government officials .

Democracy in Nigeria will develop if PDP as the largest opposition party in Nigeria today appropriately appreciates its role and
adequately carries out same with the expected altruistic motives in addressing the abysmal system of government being operated by president Buhari and APC in our Nation today.

At any point in time there can only be one driver in a car (ruling political party) and whichever party the society chooses as the
government at any point, it has a responsibility to discharge that mandate effectively and efficiently.

At this point, it is also expected that PDP has a role to play to show the electorates (Nigerians) that it is better positioned to provide leadership to Nigerians.

In addition, the government of the day must give an opportunity for persons, groups and organizations holding contrasting ideas, views, outlook, and philosophy concerning the solution to social, political, and economic
problem to air their view freely and without any form of intimidation of any kind because a democracy (society) is bide to runs a risk of basing its public policy upon insufficient data and inadequate without a viable checks and balances by a vibrant opposition.
