CORONAVIRUS: THE POSITION OF NIDSUG AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO GOVERNMENT ON THE STAY AT HOME ORDER

The Niger Delta Student Union Government (NIDSUG) wishes to use this medium to appreciate the various states Government and their intervention agencies for the timely and numerous efforts made to curtail as well as cushion the effects of the Corona virus pandemic on the good people of the region. We hereby wish to state that, the various precautionary measures taken by Government and its intervention agencies are well noted and received in good faith. However, there are basic specifics which have not really met the expected standards of the average Nigerian students.
In as much as we appreciate the lockdown on schools across the various strata, as well as the total stay at home rationale, we however want to emphatically make the following recommendations in order to ameliorate the harsh but realistic outcomes on the polity

RECOMMENDATIONS:

1) That, Governments across board and their intervention agencies put in place viable Social Welfare schemes to effectively distribute foodstuffs to Nigerian families as the stay at home subsists. It’s expedient to know that if necessary measures are not taken to cushion the effect of the stay at home on families whose means of survival is based strictly on daily labour, in no time the society shall have to deal with a very harsh social problems, such as armed robbery and stealing as well as other grievous social vices.

2) That, Government look into the possibilities of providing online learning platforms in order to cover some grounds in the academic calendar and consequently reduce the monumental impact this menace could have on the Nigerian educational calendar which is already taken its toll on the system.
However, there could be special sensitization seminars cum provisions for sanitizers and hand watching facilities.

3) That, Nigerian students on foreign studies especially those in red alert countries of the deadly pandemic should be given some attention with a view to giving them some sense of belonging and protections which they truly deserve.

4) That, the security agents meant to carry out the Government’s stay at home order should be very well supervised to ensure best civil practice as much as possible.

5) That, the Coastal communities of the Niger Delta should be given special attention because of the peculiar terrain and the near cut-out of the normal society nature of the people.
