The Delta State Football Association (DFA) has outlined strategic plans to enhance healthcare access for both active and retired footballers in the state. This was revealed during a working visit by the DFA Chairman, Chief Godwin Adode, to the Director General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, in Asaba.

Highlighting Footballers’ Healthcare Challenges
In his address, Chief Adode emphasized the pressing health issues footballers face, including injuries, chronic illnesses, and financial constraints that make accessing quality healthcare challenging.

“Many footballers struggle to afford proper medical care during and after their careers and this is why the current DFA board is dedicated to ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare for them.”

Chief Adode announced the DFA’s commitment to partnering with the DSCHC to integrate footballers into the state-managed health insurance scheme.

“This partnership aims to develop a healthcare framework specifically designed to meet the unique needs of athletes, both active and retired,” he explained.

“It will focus on critical areas such as injury management, rehabilitation, and mental health support, while also promoting healthcare awareness within the football community across the state.”

The DFA Chairman extended his gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of Deltans through the MORE agenda.

“The Governor’s efforts to improve the well-being of Deltans are remarkable, more so, we are confident this partnership will register over 2,000 footballers under the health scheme.”

He also commended Dr. Akpoveta for his dedication to improving healthcare services throughout the state.

In response, Dr. Akpoveta described the collaboration as a visionary step toward improving the welfare of athletes.

“Football is a sport that demands both physical and mental fitness, and only healthy individuals can perform optimally, and this initiative aligns perfectly with the state government’s goal of delivering accessible and quality healthcare to every Deltan.”

He further urged Chief Adode and other stakeholders to support the inclusion of indigent individuals in the scheme to broaden its impact.

The meeting concluded with Dr. Akpoveta presenting souvenirs to Chief Adode. Accompanying the DFA Chairman were Mr. Solomon Iwerenor, a DFA board member, and Mr. Patrick Mariere, DFA Secretary.
